If we take currency as some representation of value, somewhere along the line we should find a method to give value to biological life. But, the idea of currency at a biological level is much more complex: trading of chemical messages, nano-molecular machines, that replicate, according to instructions, which are themselves valued because of their millennial filtering through the eye of evolution. And yet there is no strict hierarchy, a yeast cell survives as does the mammal, the ecosystem is multiscale and optimised in some ways across each scale.
This is in odd contrast to modern definitions of technical value in currency. The disruptive novelty of the techniques are not subject to the same evolutionary test of resilience, and appear to be powered by exponentials. Exponentials either take over, or collapse, but on a timescale that has not been able to experience the breadth of what the universe challenges us with.
There would be a third way, to entwine biological values within our tools…
